MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) at Isla Mujeres

Underwater Art Galley

MUSA is a very unique art gallery because all the installations are underwater. Its surreal aquatic galleries presently contains 500 statues and the organizers are planning to add 1200 more at the time of writing. Most of the installations are at gallery Salon Manchones at Isla Mujeres. There is another gallery Punta Nizcu closer to the Cancun hotel zone that has fewer sculptures.

The special properties of the underwater environment adds a level of meaning to these installations that could never be possible with a statue museum on land. MUSA offers something new for you to see and feel. The creative themes of the galleries are capital greed, contrasted with the simple holistic living of a fisherman community. These are very relevant themes for our time and you will be enlightened by reflecting upon them while touring MUSA. What I especially love about these pieces is they change over time. The artist must surrender control of his art to the powerful sea which overgrows the pieces with coral. The ever-changing and unpredictable ocean landscape adds to the story of these pieces in unpredictable ways.

The Artistic director for MUSO is presently Jason Decaires Taylor. Taylor was educated at the London institute of arts with a BA honours degree in sculpture. He is an award winning photographer and an underwater naturalist.

You can tour MUSA by glass bottom boat, snorkel, or scuba dive. We highly recommend scuba dive for the full immersive experience of MUSA.
