Hidden Gem

Muyil is a great site located adjacent to the Sian Ka’an lagoon. It is much quieter site than Tulum or Chichen Itza. The main Castillo (pyramid) is very impressive and substantial, standing at 57 feet high. There are windy paths that go through the jungle for walking. The jungle is very beautiful and textured here with gnarly Ceiba trees and vivid green moss covered boulders. The Ceiba trees are known as the “tree of life” to the Maya and are believed to connect with the underworld. Alux (spirits) are also said to inhabit this area. The combination of the majestic temple and the rich jungle views make for a dreamy hike and communion with nature the will lift your spirits. It takes only about 60 minutes to see the site and there is a lot of shade through most of it.

Another benefit of visiting Muyil is you can extend your walk directly from the site onto a boardwalk that takes you through the Sian Ka’an portion of the site into the lagoon. The path ends art the edge of lagoon. If you visit this part of the site in the morning you can see Howler monkeys and colourful birds and butterflies.

Tours are available at entrance that combine a visit to this site and Sian Ka’an by boat.
