Reef Diving in Akumal

Akumal’s Bays are complex, with 3 major spur and groove formations. Spur and groove formations are geological features that are formed when currents and wave action create channels, or “grooves,” in the reef, and “spurs” of coral or rock that project out from the main body of the reef.

Akumal Bay is known for its diverse and abundant marine life. Some of the marine life that can be found in the bay include:

  • Sea turtles: Akumal Bay is home to several species of sea turtles, including the green turtle and the hawksbill turtle. These turtles can often be seen swimming in the bay or resting on the sandy bottom.

  • Tropical fish: The clear, warm waters of Akumal Bay are home to a variety of colorful tropical fish, including parrotfish, angelfish, and damselfish.

  • Stingrays: Stingrays are common in the bay and can often be seen gliding through the water or resting on the bottom.

  • Sharks: While not common, it is possible to see small, harmless reef sharks in the bay, especially at deeper dive sites.

  • Invertebrates: The coral reefs in the bay are home to a variety of invertebrates, including crabs, lobsters, and various types of coral.
